Pouring the Foundation Walls

Part 1
I really was there - 9k

See, I really was there.
Sometimes I'm in the pictures, too.

Preparing the chute.
This is actually our third load of concrete.  We call it the second pour.

We had driven all the way to Dallas to get bolts from Bill's mother.  She had lent them to his brother and so we went there.

We drilled holes through the forms.  It took two people to put the washers and nuts on the bolts, me on one side of the form to keep the bolt from turning and Bill on the other to put the nuts on the bolts.  The bolts held the forms to their proper spacing.

We erroniously assumed that when we ran out of bolts we were through.  We were over anxious to pour.  The forms on the left side of the wall started to swell.  The concrete pushed out of the form at the corner.  We stopped the pour and had the driver dump the rest of the concrete at the front of our drive.  What a waste.

The out side of the form     The next weekend we removed and dismantled the end of the form where we had been able to fill completely.  We use the materials to build the form in the right corner.  We even straighted the nails and reused them.

The inside of the right back corner,Notice the extra 2x4's we used to braced the corner.  We learn fast.  See the generator in the forground of this photo.  We didn't have electricity at the lot.  Some dumb rule that you have to have a water well before the electric company would run a line to the lot.  My grandparents let us have their generator.  We were very greatful.  It had enough amps to run our small drill or our jigsaw, but not enough for our rotary saw.  It was much easier than handsawing.

Concrete truck     We used a different concrete company that had a lower minimum amout of concrete they would agree to pour.  It was difficult to judge exactly how much concrete we needed to top off the forms that had started to buckel.  We poured the corner and finished filling the back form we had reinforced.  Then the rest of the load went to the drive.

the bloated corner     We've removed the forms and you can see the two different colors of concrete.   You can also see all the wood from the forms, cleaned stacked and ready to use again.
